Software Engineer, Vienna

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Chief, Engineering and Development Section, International Monitoring System Division, (IMS), to: Identify, plan and execute projects and provide software engineering solutions in support of the installation, testing, operation and maintenance of the IMS.  This includes data acquisition, communications technology, computer networking applications, interface issues, data security/authentication, calibration, state-of-health monitoring, configuration management, incidents and problem management. Identify areas of potential improvements to the seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound and radionuclide data acquisition software and make improvements as required. Identify software needs.  Specify and write software project requirements and specifications. Select and define appropriate development tools and technologies and oversee the software development and lifecycle processes. Lead, participate and influence the software design and development process. Manage projects and coordinate multiple contractors, ensure proper software validation and testing procedures and manage software maintenance and evolution, ensuring software quality. Provide guidance and training. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Advanced university degree in computer science, engineering, geophysics, nuclear sciences or a related field with emphasis on scientific software management and development. At least seven years relevant working experience, at least two of which should have been in an international environment, in management and development of scientific software to process large volumes of data, using UNIX operating systems, C programming language and relational databases, especially Oracle. Experience in UNIX-based computer systems, TCP/IP networking, web applications and services, data authentication and public key infrastructure concepts.  Experience in software life-cycle methodology is an advantage. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Working knowledge of one of the other official languages of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission is an asset.

REMUNERATION/CONTRACT:
Depending on professional background and experience, indicative tax-free annual net base salary (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$104,310 (without dependants) and US$112,016 (with dependants), subject to deductions of contributions to the CTBTO Provident Fund and Health Insurance Scheme. Additional benefits include, when applicable, dependency allowance, education grant for children, rental subsidy, six weeks vacation per year, home leave travel every two years.  Initial contract for a fixed term of three years.
